The Brazilian Society for the Study of Elasmobranchs (SBEEL) is deeply saddened to know about the loss of Dr. Samuel Gruber. He was a beloved friend to many of us and certainly provided great inspiration to researchers, students and elasmobranch lovers all over the world. In his several visits to Brazil, at the AES and SBEEL meetings, or during the collaborative research on the lemon sharks at Fernando de Noronha and Atol das Rocas, he always captivated people with knowledge, experience and good spirits.  His open-heartedness will never be forgotten and his contributions to elasmobranch science will remain forever. We send our condolences to his family and friends.
